The F470 – Ferretti’s Sporty Entry-Level Yacht
November 23, 2008
Italian yacht connoisseur Ferretti is adding a new entry-level option to its desirable armada in the form of the Ferretti 470, an ambitious, sporty model designed to replace the 2004 Ferretti 460, and by extension break much new ground in its class.
Made by Ferretti in collaboration with Advanced Yacht Technology (AYT) and the Studio Zuccon International Project, the compact Ferretti 470’s class leading features include an innovative layout concept first seen in the Ferretti 510, a spacious sun lounge, and an adjustable door that makes it possible to combine the cockpit, galley and living areas.
There are three cabins including a forward master cabin with a large bathroom, and an increased window area that allows for an uninhibited view and plenty of natural light.
Further cutting edge technology comes optional, including the Anti Rolling Gyro system that reduces wave-induced movement by over 50 percent, and the Gi8 system that through SMS enables perpetual monitoring of emergencies and yacht management.
The Ferretti 470 was displayed at the recent Genoa International Boat Show in early October, alongside a host of the company’s other new boats. Other models unveiled at the show included the Ferretti 631 and the Apreamare 44’.

Montauk Home Theater Is Cool On Lighting
November 15, 2008
This home theater at the basement of the Montauk Residence in New York utilizes a clever play on lighting and shapes to achieve a cosy ambience.
Designed by James Biber, an architect and partner at Pentagram, an international design firm, Biber was inspired by Radio City Music Hall, where the lights face the stage, away from the viewers.
These lights – all 600 of them – are housed inside the arches of telescopic rectangles that appear larger the closer they are to the screen.
The result is a soft, even lighting that floods the 350 sq. ft. room with an inviting feel. So even on the dimmest setting, you can still reach for your cuppa without worrying that you will spill it.
Ferretti Launches First Hybrid Yacht
November 15, 2008
While hybrid cars are no longer a novelty thanks to an increasing number of automakers hopping on the eco-bandwagon with their own versions, the idea of hybrids has not had the same success or impact in the nautical arena.
Mochi Craft, a brand under famous luxury yacht maker Ferretti Group, aims to change this when it unveiled what the company claims as the world’s first hybrid yacht at the 48th Salone Nautico Internazaionale (otherwise known as the Genoa Boat Show), which kicked off over the weekend.
The hybrid yacht, called the Long Range 23, is a 75-foot three deck motor yacht which features a hybrid propulsion system developed by Ferretti’s Advanced Yacht Technology (AYT) division.

This system allows the owner to regulate the yacht’s emissions depending on the sailing requirements through a diesel-electric engine combination. This, in effect, makes zero emissions possible when the boat is running on battery power, and has already earned her a RINA Green Star certification.

In addition, Ferretti’s engineers from AYT has built a high-tech hull for the Long Range 23 that improves hydrodynamic efficiency, reduces roll, and improves static stability, which means the boat will stay moored even in locations subject to tides.
Pentagon Clears Flying-Car Project for Takeoff
November 15, 2008
Pentagon mad-science division Darpa is helping build thought controlled robotic limbs, artificial pack mules, real-life laser guns and “kill proof “soldiers. So it comes as no surprise, really, that the agency is now getting into the flying-car business, too.
Darpa hopes it’s “Personal Air Vehicle Technology” project, announced yesterday, will ultimately lead to a working prototype of a military-suitable flying car — a two- or four-passenger vehicle that can “drive on roads” one minute and take off like a helicopter the next. The hybrid machine would be perfect for “urban scouting,” casualty evacuation and commando-delivery missions, the agency believes.
Flying cars have been a just-around-the-corner promise for decades, of course. Today, several companies swear that they are just on the verge of manufacturing such machines. Terrafugia claims its folding wing mini plane will be ready to deliver by 2009. Pal-V has a three-wheeled gyrocopter thingy y. Urban Aeronautics promises to do the whole thing without any wings or rotors at all. And let’s not even get into the personal flying saucers.
Darpa says its Cessna-sized combo vehicle should be able to cruise at 60 mph on land, and 150 mph in the air. It should be able to stay aloft for two hours on a tank of fuel. “The challenge,” the agency says, “is to define the major components of such a vehicle that would be suitable for military scouting and personnel transport missions, yet are small enough, inexpensive enough, and easy enough to operate that it can be widely used.”
To make the flying car work, Darpa believes, makers will have to use “morphing wings” to ease the transition from road to sky; “optimized disk loading” propulsion, “for the combined fly/drive mission”; and strong flight control software. Darpa isn’t making an enormous commitment to the flying car, just yet. This is a project aimed at small business; contracts of this type are typically under a million dollars per year. But maybe, with a small Pentagon push, the flying car dream could finally clear the ground.

MB&F Horological Machine No3
November 13, 2008
![]()
Max Busser of MB&F was in Singapore to unveil the new MB&F Horological Machine No3 (HM3) to the press and a select group of collectors.
As with the previous two Horological Machines, the HM3 defies expectations yet simultaneously affirms all that horology enthusiasts have come to expect from MB&F.
Busser reveals that his inspiration was twofold: he wanted to build a spaceship for the wrist and a wristwatch that was simply cool. When one looks at this eminently wearable timepiece, one might think of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars.
The watch comes in two configurations, one with its cones in line with the wearer’s arm (Starcruiser) and the other with its cones perpendicular to the wearer’s arm (Sidewinder).
The story here is told by both the shape of the watch and the configuration of the movement, with balance assembly and rotor appearing dial-side.
Hours and minutes are delivered by the two cones (via the ceramic ball bearings visible through the caseback) while the date is supplied via a ring around the movement. Thus the movement appears to be framed by the display of time.

Vertu Ascent Ti Ferrari Collection
November 13, 2008
Luxury mobile phone producer Vertu debuts three new editions to their Ferrari-branded handsets, modeled on the Ascent Ti.
Previous Vertu phones for Ferrari have all used the Ascent model as a base but this time, there is a simple prancing horse and bonnet detailing on the back in place of the shift gate and brake pedal on the back.
Like the Ascent Ti, the case is made of titanium, which is a fitting tribute to one of the world’s most famous racing marques.
The Vertu Ascent Ti Ferrari Nero (black) is a limited edition of 2009 sets while the Ferrari Rosso (red) and Ferrari Giallo (yellow) not limited. As is usually the case with Vertu, exclusive ringtones – including engine sounds of the F430 and the 612 Scaglietti, and music by Dave Stewart – are part of the package.
